Using technology to achieve sustainable goals

Meeting sustainable goals has become a necessity for all organizations. The environmental challenges we face, such as climate change, resource depletion, pollution or biodiversity loss, must be solved urgently. For this, technology is our best tool, and will help us in the transition to a more sustainable future in which we do not compromise the needs of future generations.

The European Union is committed to the use of technology to address the challenges of climate change. In Spain, the aim is to achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) established within the Spain Digital Agenda 2026. The SDGs aim to achieve a better and more sustainable future for everyone in different areas. One of these areas is business, which will play a fundamental role in achieving the goals set.

The Public Cloud is the best ally to steer strategies towards sustainability. It provides resources for energy monitoring and optimization, and is a tool that can help companies reduce their environmental footprint and achieve carbon neutrality, while also realizing cost savings. Among the tools it provides, we find:

  • Sustainability calculator: to measure the impact and reduce the carbon footprint of infrastructure.
  • AI and analytics: to optimize inputs and leverage analytics to identify efficiencies across the value chain.
  • Cost management (FinOps): to integrate sustainability into cloud cost management processes to control costs without compromising sustainability goals.
  • Ecosystem innovation: to leverage innovation to accelerate Time to Market and facilitate integration into sustainable digital ecosystems.
  • New IT operating models: product-driven models can help reduce carbon footprint by leveraging automation and code optimization in DevOps and AlOps.

In recent years, organizations have been faced with the need to incorporate a modern and efficient data strategy that is able to drive business value and positively impact sustainability. The data-driven approach accelerates companies’ sustainability efforts by providing relevant and actionable insights into environmental impacts, optimizing resource use and reducing waste. Data is part of the digital transformation, one of the key pillars of the energy transition.

Cloud and Artificial Intelligence based solutions drive sustainable practices by adding value to companies through improved efficiency, reduced costs and enhaced brand reputation. Some of these solutions are:

  • Internet of Things (IoT): can be used to collect real-time data for organizations to optimize the use of their resources and reduce their environmental impact.
  • Big data analytics: thanks to Big Data, patterns and trends in environmental performance can be identified. It provides data-driven insights needed to make decisions.
  • Artificial Intelligence: allows the use of advanced algorithms to build predictive models, leading to cost savings and environmental benefits.
  • Digital twins: creating virtual replicas of physical assets helps to simulate and analyze environmental impacts driving sustainability and business value.

The main challenge companies face are short-term obstacles that impede future impact. For example, it is not easy to measure environmental impact and implementing sustainable actions can be too costly. This is coupled with an insufficient supply of sustainable or low-emission inputs. The magnitude of the change required is too large and not all companies will be able to cope unless they put in place the right strategies and rely on the necessary tools.
